Ghana’s music market is increasingly becoming a gateway for regional sounds in Africa, according to the newly released Luminate 2025 Midyear Music Report.
The report positions Ghana as one of the most receptive countries to cross-border music consumption on the continent, highlighting its strategic role in the evolution of Africa’s digital music economy.
In a comparative analysis of local versus regional and international streaming behaviors, the report reveals that while countries like Nigeria maintain a strong preference for homegrown music, recording over 61% of streams from local artists.
Ghana’s listeners are more open to regional imports, with 24.7% of streams coming from other African countries.
This trend underscores Ghana’s unique position as a musical melting pot, where audiences are embracing a diverse range of African sounds beyond its borders.
According to Luminate, this openness to regional music suggests Ghana could serve as a launchpad for pan-African hits, especially for artists seeking exposure across Anglophone West Africa.
The report also highlights the growing influence of Afrobeats in global digital communities. While Nigeria continues to lead the Afrobeats charge, Ghana’s appetite for a mix of genres, including Highlife, Hiplife, Gospel, and Afrobeats, positions it as a dynamic and influential market within the streaming ecosystem.
