Renowned private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has revealed that he was once denied employment in a state constitutional body under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration due to perceived political bias.
According to Mr. Kpebu, his application was rejected because he was allegedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during its time in opposition.
He recounted that a senior official, who played a pivotal role in overseeing appointments to the institution, openly cited his supposed political leanings as the reason for the decision.
“Just for standing up against the bad governance of former President Akufo-Addo, there was this state institution, closer to the Bank of Ghana, when they saw a client trying to hire my services in terms of a contract he (the client) was executing, they told the client that this guy (he, Martin Kpebu) is an NDC, remove his name. They say, remove his name and the client removes my name,” he alleged.
The outspoken lawyer made this disclosure on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, June 27, while contributing to conversations surrounding the recent dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of staff at the Bank of Ghana.
When asked to disclose the institution and persons involved in his allegation, he said, “I don’t want to muddy the waters. I don’t want to mention the names so that this thing will escalate.”
Drawing parallels between his alleged experience and the unfolding developments at the central bank, Mr Kpebu bemoaned that, “these things run deep.”
His comments come amid allegations of political victimisation at the Bank of Ghana, where several employees were reportedly dismissed and later reinstated under contentious circumstances.
Meanwhile, Mr Kpebu argued that the Governor of the Bank has done the right thing by reinstating the dismissed staff, “on the balance, it shows that the Governor is a listening Governor than they (NPP administration)were in the previous time.
He called for urgent reforms to insulate state institutions from political interference, warning that the current trajectory undermines national cohesion and professionalism.
