GHC1m not enough to halt GPL player exodus – George Afriyie

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, says he is not convinced the FA can stop the exodus of players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) despite the injection of GHC 1 million.

GFA President Kurt Okraku recently announced a minimum payment of GHC 1 million to Premier League clubs ahead of the 2025/26 football season.

The move follows a new broadcast partnership between the FA, the government through the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah and Adesa Productions.

“The money is not enough to retain players in the league,” Afriyie told Asempa FM.

“In Ethiopia, players earn about $2,500; in Tanzania, they make between $2,500 and $3,000; and in Sudan, salaries are close to $5,000.

“So, offering someone 5,000 Ghana cedis is simply not enough to compete with these leagues.

“These are the things we should be thinking about if we want to make our league attractive.”

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League will kick off on the weekend of September 12.
