Medeama SC defensive midfielder Prosper Boakye Owusu has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address salary structure in the Ghanaian top-flight.
The Ghana Premier League has been marred by the low wages and remunerations offered to players plying their trade in the top-flight. In the past few years, players who perform better tend to travel to Africa and Europe at large for greener pastures.
Boakye Owusu, who is concerned about the meager salaries has implored the Ghana FA to help resolve the situation at hand.
“Salaries for Ghana Premier League players is not okay. After playing in the league, there are high expectations placed on you. There is an obligation to fulfil back home. The truth is that, many players provide for themselves, particularly football boots and others. Imaging taking GHC700 or GHC800 and buying boots at the same time”
“If not for contract, I think it will be prudent for the GFA to step in and address issues regarding player salaries”
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old has proposed GHC5,000 as a minimum wage for Ghana Premier League players.
“The minimum wage for Ghana Premier League players should be GHC 5,000” he said.
Considered as one of the best midfielders in the Ghanaian top-flight, the 22-year-old has attracted significant interests due to his swashbuckling performance. He has established himself as a key cog to the Medeama team since his arrival.
Boakye Owusu racked up 21 appearances in the Ghana Premier League campaign, serving just an assist across the period.
