Mahama: Fire officers behind Class FM reporter attack interdicted

0

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service involved in the attack on a Class FM reporter have been identified and interdicted.

Speaking on the incident on Thursday, January 8, President Mahama described the assault as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of media freedom and professionalism.

According to him, the actions of the officers do not reflect the values expected of security service personnel.

“There is no way we will tolerate the continued assault on journalists. We have engaged with the Ghana Journalists Association on these issues and will ensure they are in touch with the security services.

President Mahama called for the urgent reorientation of security personnel, particularly in their engagement with members of the media.

“Many of our security personnel need reorientation to understand that, just as they provide safety, journalists are also performing their duty to inform the public. They are not antagonists to each other; they are both serving the public,” President Mahama said.

The journalist, Samuel Addo, was covering a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market on Monday, January 5, 2026, when he was reportedly confronted and manhandled by fire service officers attempting to prevent him from filming the scene.

A video captured by Citi News showed Addo being pushed amid the chaos, while some personnel shouted at him.

The fire began on Sunday, January 4, 2026, and the GNFS received the distress call at 4:50 p.m. The first fire tender arrived eight minutes later, by which time the fire had already reached an advanced stage.

Ghanaians divided over proposal for president to pay taxes

0

Some Ghanaians have expressed mixed reactions to a proposal by the Constitutional Review Consultative Committee (CRCC) for the presidents of Ghana to pay taxes on their salaries and emoluments.

The proposal is aimed at setting an example for the rest of the citizenry and reflects the principle of equality before the law and accords with the rule of law.

Some citizens have expressed divided opinions on the recommendation, with those in favour stating it would serve as a motivation for citizens to pay their taxes.

Mr Desmond Oti, a worker supporting the recommendation, said it was a good recommendation which must be extended to ministers of state and members of parliament.

“They take major decisions that affect the lives of ordinary people, so they should also feel the same financial pressures we face every day,” he noted.

Ms Rachel Owusu, a graduate student at the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC–IJ), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the President, as a salaried worker, should be subjected to the same tax obligations as all other citizens.

“The President works for the country and receives a monthly salary like any other worker, so he should also pay taxes. No one should be above the law,” she said, adding that the move would strengthen public trust in governance.

Mrs Abigail Darley Bortey, a trader, said many people in the informal sector viewed the president’s tax exemption as unfair, especially when market women and small business operators were required to pay taxes.

“If the President pays taxes, it shows he is a citizen like everyone else. It will encourage people to comply willingly because they will see that the law applies equally to everyone,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr Samuel Addo argued that the President’s position was unique and should retain certain privileges, including tax exemptions.

He described the presidency as a demanding office that required constant sacrifice, adding that a tax-free salary was a modest way of recognising the responsibilities attached to the role.

“The President gives up his private life to serve the nation around the clock. Allowing him a tax-free salary helps to preserve the dignity and stature of the office,” he said.

Help us clear GH¢13.6m electricity debt – GBC to govt

0

The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene to clear a GH¢13.6 million legacy electricity debt, warning that the burden continues to threaten the operations of the state broadcaster.

Speaking during President Mahama’s visit to GBC, Prof. Alhassan explained that the arrears date back several years, to a period when multiple state institutions shared electricity infrastructure with GBC and were not separately metered.

According to him, when the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) later installed meters in GBC’s name, power consumption by other agencies—including the military, police and national security—was recorded under the broadcaster’s account. Those agencies subsequently disconnected and made alternative arrangements, leaving GBC saddled with unpaid bills.

“One issue that gives us sleepless nights is the legacy debt from ECG and NEDCO. These debts were not generated by GBC alone. In the past, when government agencies, including the military, police, and national security, shared power infrastructure at GBC, they drew electricity from the same source. When meters were later installed in GBC’s name, the debt started accumulating under GBC. When we drew their attention, these agencies disconnected, leaving the accumulated debt for GBC to pay,” he said.

Prof. Alhassan disclosed that GBC has already paid GH¢5 million towards the arrears this year but remains burdened by a substantial outstanding balance.

“Currently, we have paid GH¢5 million, but we still have an outstanding debt of GH¢13.6 million. We are appealing for the government to take care of this legacy debt,” he added.
