Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has sparked conversation after stating that Janet Jackson deserves to be called the “King of Pop” more than her late brother, Michael Jackson.
The “Sad Girls Love Money” singer made the comment while discussing Janet Jackson’s influence and her 1997 album The Velvet Rope during an interview with Pitchfork.
According to Amaarae, every Janet Jackson album stands out, but The Velvet Rope remains her strongest body of work because of its emotional depth and experimental sound.
“Every Janet Jackson album is fantastic, but The Velvet Rope is the best. If I was aware in 1997 when it came out, I would have had it on repeat. It’s vulnerable, sexy, aggressive, and experimental,” she said.She went on to praise Janet Jackson’s artistry, adding that she believes Janet deserves even more recognition in pop music history.“Janet, to me, is the real king of pop.
