British singer Ed Sheeran has been fined after his classic Aston Martin was found to be uninsured while undergoing restoration and conversion into an electric vehicle.
The issue dates back to 2021, when Sheeran sent the silver 1966 Aston Martin to a specialist workshop for extensive restoration work. During a routine vehicle records check in December 2025, authorities discovered that the car did not have valid insurance. In a written statement presented to the court, Sheeran explained that he believed the workshop’s insurance policy covered the vehicle while it remained in their care.
He also said the Aston Martin had not been driven on public roads for the past five years because it was still being restored. The court accepted his guilty plea for keeping a vehicle that did not meet insurance requirements. He was ordered to pay a £666 fine, £100 in court costs, and a £266 victim surcharge.Sheeran told the court that the vehicle had stayed at the workshop since 2021 and had remained off the road throughout that period.
He stressed that it had been inoperable and that there was no risk to the public because the car had never been driven without insurance. He also apologized for the matter reaching court, describing it as a genuine administrative misunderstanding. According to Sheeran, he never received the initial opportunity to settle the issue with an out-of-court penalty, adding that he would have paid it immediately if he had been notified. The singer later registered the vehicle as officially off the road under a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) while restoration work continued.
His case was handled through the Single Justice Procedure, a process used to deal with certain non-imprisonable offences without a full court hearing.
