Former James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams has shared her opinion that the legendary British spy should continue to be portrayed as a white male, saying the character should remain true to the version originally created by author Ian Fleming.
Speaking during an interview at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, McWilliams explained that she does not believe the role should be given to a woman or a non-white actor.
According to her, Bond’s identity has always been tied to Fleming’s original vision.McWilliams, who spent more than four decades casting Bond films before leaving the franchise, also spoke about the qualities she believes are essential for whoever takes on the role.
She said James Bond must have a commanding presence and be convincing as someone capable of carrying out dangerous missions.Reflecting on the actors who have portrayed the famous spy over the years, she praised Pierce Brosnan for bringing charm and sophistication to the role, while describing Daniel Craig’s version of Bond as tougher and more intense.
Although she is no longer involved with the franchise, McWilliams hinted that major changes could be coming for the James Bond series in the near future.
Meanwhile, the search for Daniel Craig’s successor continues. Auditions began in May after a five-year break since Bond’s last appearance on the big screen. Several actors have been linked to the role, while other lesser-known performers are also reportedly being considered as fans continue to speculate over who will become the next 007.
