Nollywood actor and filmmaker IK Ogbonna has finally spoken publicly about the heartbreaking loss of his close friend and colleague, Alex Ekubo, months after his passing.
Alex Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, after battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
He passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos following hours on life support.
While many noticed IK Ogbonna remained silent throughout the funeral and burial ceremonies, the actor has now explained his grief through a touching tribute shared on Instagram.In his emotional message, Ogbonna described Alex as more than a friend, calling him a brother whose death completely changed his understanding of life and loss.He admitted that losing someone so close made him realize the true weight of death, saying people rarely understand such pain until it affects someone they deeply love.
According to him, the past two months have been filled with unanswered questions as he struggled to understand why someone so full of life could suddenly be gone.
The actor reflected on the dreams they shared together, including growing old, building successful businesses, producing movies, travelling the world, raising families and leaving behind lasting legacies. He said they always believed they had plenty of time, never imagining one of them would leave first.Despite the pain, Ogbonna said his faith has helped him find peace, even though many questions remain unanswered.
He believes God’s wisdom is greater than human understanding and has chosen to trust that there is a purpose beyond what people can see.Remembering Alex, he said his greatest comfort is knowing his late friend lived a meaningful life filled with love, kindness, generosity and genuine care for others. He noted that true success is not measured by wealth, fame or awards, but by the positive impact a person leaves on the lives of others.The actor added that the experience has reminded him how fragile life truly is.
Material possessions and achievements eventually fade, but love, good character and the way people treat others continue to live on in the memories they leave behind.Ogbonna said he has decided to keep moving forward by continuing to create, work and pursue his purpose, not because the pain has disappeared, but because every new day is a precious gift.He encouraged people to appreciate their loved ones while they still can, forgive easily, spend time with family and friends, and live intentionally.
