Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has weighed in on the growing debate about social media influence in the Nigerian film industry, insisting that online popularity can never replace genuine acting talent.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Selah Meditate podcast, Owoh addressed concerns that some filmmakers now prefer casting actors based on their social media following rather than their skills.
According to him, while social media fame may open doors, it does not determine true acting ability.
He said real talent will always stand out regardless of online popularity, stressing that no amount of social media influence can substitute for skill and performance.
His comments come amid ongoing criticism from some Nollywood actors who have accused filmmakers of prioritising beauty, physique, complexion, and online presence over talent when selecting cast members.
Despite these concerns, Owoh believes the foundation of acting remains skill-based and cannot be replaced by trends on social platforms.
