Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has stirred debate online after sharing her views on the role emotional intelligence plays in modern relationships.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality Podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa argued that many Nigerian men focus more on providing financially than building strong emotional connections with their partners.
According to her, the common perception that Nigerian women are overly materialistic is partly influenced by how some men approach dating. She believes many men see financial generosity as the primary way to express affection, often overlooking meaningful communication and emotional intimacy.
Makinwa said that, in her experience, some men are quick to offer money or expensive gifts instead of taking time to genuinely know the person they are interested in. She added that this pattern has helped shape a dating culture where material expectations have become increasingly common.
She further argued that many women learned to place greater value on financial benefits because they were repeatedly shown that money was the main thing being offered in relationships. Her comments have sparked mixed reactions across social media. While some people agreed that emotional intelligence is often neglected in relationships, others felt her remarks unfairly generalized Nigerian men.
