Veteran American actor James Handy, known for his long career in film and television, has died after being stabbed at his home in Los Angeles. He was 81.Police say Handy was found unconscious in the front garden of his residence in Tarzana, California, on Wednesday, suffering multiple stab wounds to his chest.
Despite emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.A 44-year-old man, identified as the son of Handy’s girlfriend, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Authorities say the suspect lives at the property with his mother, who was in a relationship with the late actor.Officers responded after a distress call reporting “unknown trouble.” During the incident, the caller allegedly made a disturbing statement before police arrived. Investigators later detained the suspect at the scene, where he reportedly identified himself to officers.Police have described the case as an isolated incident, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The suspect has been booked for murder and is being held on bail set at $2 million.Handy built a decades-long acting career with appearances in numerous popular films and television series. He often played supporting roles and became a familiar face in productions such as NYPD Blue, Law & Order, CSI: NY, The West Wing, The X-Files, and Castle.In film, he appeared in titles including Arachnophobia, Logan, K-9, and Jumanji. One of his final roles was in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where he played a bartender.
His death has prompted tributes from fans who remember him as a consistent and recognizable presence across decades of Hollywood productions.
