Auditor-General’s Report: We have normalised corruption, theft and scandals – Prof Abotsi

The Dean of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Law School, Professor Kofi Abotsi, has delivered an assessment of the nation’s moral and institutional decay.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile following the Attorney-General’s Report, Prof Abotsi lamented the erosion of ethical governance in Ghana.

“We have normalised corruption, we have normalised scandals, we have normalised theft,” he declared.

“It becomes so normal when you repeat and repeat them over and over again and nothing happens.”

According to Prof Abotsi, the lack of action has created a culture of impunity in which unethical behaviour has been absorbed into the very fabric of public administration.

“What we are doing and what we have done is to mainstream corruption to a point where it has become virtually legitimised,” he warned.

Drawing attention to the psychological consequences of unaddressed wrongdoing, Prof Abotsi suggested that the term corruption itself may no longer carry the moral gravity it once held.

“Maybe the word corruption itself may have to be looked at, because from the psychological standpoint it seems to have gained a certain legitimate currency.”
