With the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially opening nominations for its 2028 flagbearer race, and competition intensifying, the overwhelming favourite is beginning to emerge.
More than two hundred thousand NPP delegates will cast their ballots to select the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general election. These delegates are organised into blocs, ranging from the grassroots at the polling station level to the top echelon of the party.
With the formal process already underway, most key blocs within the party are aligning with the candidate widely expected to win, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President of the Republic.
One of the most influential blocs, the party’s parliamentary caucus of 88 members, has proved pivotal in endorsing candidates.
Sources confirm that the 2024 flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, has secured the backing of a substantial majority of NPP Members of Parliament, despite two MPs — Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum — having publicly declared their intentions to contest the position.
“I can confirm that out of the 88 NPP Members of Parliament, about 62 from various parts of the country support Dr Bawumia,” the source said.
According to the same source, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong commands the support of eight MPs, followed by Bryan Acheampong with seven. Nine MPs remain undecided for now.
Beyond parliamentary support, Dr Bawumia also enjoys strong backing from the party’s former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), more than 200 of whom publicly endorsed him in July.
The former Vice-President’s network of support also extends to the overwhelming majority of regional and constituency chairmen and executives.
Perhaps the most decisive bloc rallying behind Dr Bawumia is the party’s grassroots, where a growing sentiment favours retaining the 2024 candidate in line with the NPP’s tradition since the 1996 election.
On Tuesday, August 12, about 490 of the party’s 552 youth organisers — responsible for mobilising the grassroots in all 275 constituencies — issued a statement endorsing the former Vice-President.
Our source, a senior figure within the NPP, anticipates a competitive election process but predicts it will ultimately see all major blocs unite behind Dr Bawumia.
Meanwhile, contenders Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong have already picked up their nomination forms, while Dr Bawumia is yet to do so.
