CEO of Databank, Kojo Addae Mensah, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enforce strict sanctions, particularly suspension, on clubs that fail to comply with the newly introduced Standard Player Contract.
The contract framework, recently unveiled by the GFA, aims to raise the bar for player welfare by instituting minimum contractual standards.
It seeks to guarantee basic rights for footballers, ensure parity in club-player relationships, and reduce the frequency of legal wrangling in Ghana’s football landscape.
Speaking in an interview with Luv Fm, Mr. Addae Mensah stressed the need for firm enforcement, urging the GFA to suspend clubs that fail to adhere to the new regulations.
He emphasized that improving player welfare is non-negotiable and clubs must be held accountable to foster professionalism in Ghanaian football.
“It’s not punitive enough. Some clubs will go and do an altercation, they will go to the firing committee, before I hear, they will say that they have been fined 5,000 Cedis. I mean, it’s not punitive.
“For me, if you breach this, because this is the player’s welfare, these are the actors of the game. If you ask me, if you breach this, you must be suspended from the league.
“In Europe, clubs have been relegated in for breaches like this. It has happened many times. Juventus flouted something, they were relegated. You know, so, we have to put in proper punitive measures, but if you do slap on the wrist punitive measures there, it won’t take us anywhere” he told Luv FM.
The GFA Standard Player Contract is designed to create a fair and consistent framework for player contracts within the competition, minimizing disputes and ensuring basic standards are met.
