The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has commended the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for what it describes as a “massive breakthrough” in the ongoing fight against the importation of fake diapers into Ghana.
This follows the seizure of over 360 bales of counterfeit diapers at a residence in Community 12, Tema, on Thursday, 24th July 2025.
The operation, led by the FDA’s enforcement team in Tema and based on actionable intelligence, uncovered what officials estimate to be the equivalent of two 40-foot containers full of fake products.
According to the CPA, the consignment was brought in by a company identified as Natural Power, which allegedly mislabelled the shipment at the Tema Port as “Disposable Plywoven Bags” under HS Code 392329 instead of the appropriate code for diapers (9619) in a bid to evade detection by Customs and FDA officials.
In a separate but related incident, two additional containers of fake diapers believed to belong to FK Clearing Cleaning Logistics (trading under the name Ness-D Diapers) have been impounded by Customs and left abandoned at the MPS Terminal since June 2025, after the clearing agent reportedly fled.
Executive Director of the CPA in charge of Media and Arbitration, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, praised the FDA and the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division for their vigilance.
“We commend the Customs officials for rising to the occasion and saving over 2.5 million children of this country from potential health risks associated with the use of these fake diapers,” he stated.
The CPA has urged that both the FDA and the Customs Division hand over the identified importers to the police or National Security for prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.
Additionally, the CPA disclosed that it has gathered intelligence on two more importers of fake diapers and plans to officially notify the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for further investigations.
This latest bust comes on the back of a similar high-profile operation in April 2025, during which the FDA seized and destroyed over 1 million fake diapers.
“This is a significant step in protecting consumers, particularly children, from harm. We are hopeful that with continued vigilance, these harmful products will be eliminated from our markets,” the CPA stressed.
Photos of the seized items and the impounded containers are said to be in the possession of the authorities.
