From Africa to the World: How Tosin Ologun is elevating African fashion globally

Tosin Kehinde Ologun has embarked on a transformative journey that spans Nigeria, Ghana, the United Kingdom and beyond, all in pursuit of showcasing African fashion on a global scale. As founder of the ‘Táàńwá’ label, a Yoruba term a Yoruba term that translates to “sought after,” she champions a new wave of African designs rooted in cultural storytelling, sustainability and slow-fashion principles.

Tosin Ologun’s passion for style began in secondary school, where she taught herself to sew and crafted accessories from local textiles. Determined to refine her skills she entered a formal apprenticeship in 2016, mastering garment construction and supplementing her training with courses in fashion sketching, technical drawing and design illustration. These early experiences laid the groundwork for her ability to translate cultural inspiration into ready-to-wear artistry.

In 2019, she launched her first brand under the name, Omotola Official in Abuja. Specializing in bridal wear, formal attire and Afro-contemporary pieces, Ologun’s bespoke collections quickly gained acclaim for their meticulous craftsmanship and seamless fusion of tradition and modern elegance. Her work attracted a diverse clientele of professionals and creatives drawn to her narrative-driven approach.

A relocation to the United Kingdom marked a pivotal moment. Tosin Ologun discovered that her high-quality, culturally infused designs resonated with customers across Europe and the African diaspora. Embracing this global demand she rebranded her label to ‘Táàńwá’ which means ‘what we’ve been seeking’ in Yoruba. The new name reflects her mission to position African heritage as a luxury experience, empowering women worldwide while honouring ancestral artistry.

By 2025, ‘Táàńwá’ had secured official registration in both the UK and Nigeria, solidifying Ologun’s rise as an international fashion force. The label’s entrance into London’s competitive market highlights her bold vision: to blend African craftsmanship with contemporary luxury and challenge established industry norms.

Today, ‘Táàńwá’ collections are available in select boutiques and online platforms across three continents, with plans to expand into Asia. Each piece is crafted in collaboration with local artisans, using sustainable materials and designs that celebrate the continent’s diverse identities. Ologun’s commitment to ethical production and cultural authenticity sets her brand apart in an era of fast fashion.

Tosin Kehinde Ologun’s ascent from apprentice to international designer highlights the power of cultural conviction and entrepreneurial spirit. Her work inspires emerging creatives to embrace their heritage while daring to reach global audiences. As she continues to innovate and reshape perceptions of African style, Ologun proves that the world has indeed been seeking a fresh, authentic voice and she is delivering it in full colour.
