The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has expressed grave concern over the escalating incidents of insecurity in various parts of the country.
According to him, the recent acts of violence and lawlessness continue to destabilise communities and threaten national peace.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, July 31, he said the association is particularly alarmed by recurrent violence in areas such as Bawku in the Upper East Region, Nkwanta in the Oti Region, Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, and Asawase in the Ashanti Region.
“The association is deeply concerned over the rising incidents of insecurity in some parts of the country, particularly in Bawku, Nkwanta, Ashaiman and Asawase,” Mr Dwumfour stated.
“These recurring episodes of violence, ethnic tensions and armed attacks continue to threaten the peace, cohesion and the security of affected communities and pose a serious threat to national stability,” he said.
Of particular concern to the GJA is the tragic killing of innocent school children, reportedly caught in crossfire during disturbances in some of the affected areas.
“The killing of innocent school children while they are in school is very disturbing and unfortunate,” the GJA President said.
GJA Stands for Peace and Dialogue
The association joined a chorus of peace-loving Ghanaians in condemning the violence, which has reportedly claimed lives, displaced residents, and brought socio-economic activity to a halt in some communities.
The GJA also called on individuals and groups behind the disturbances to immediately lay down their arms and embrace peaceful dialogue.
“We strongly urge individuals and groups behind these disturbances to lower their arms and embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence,” Mr Dwumfour urged.
