Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, says the government is committed to creating two million jobs over the next four years as part of its strategy to reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr Pelpuo described the job creation agenda as a crucial step toward engaging Ghana’s youthful population and revitalising the economy.
“We intend to create two million jobs over the four years in government. It is our commitment. You aim high, and whatever happens, we expect to create more jobs,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the plan is not just about employment numbers but about building a more dynamic economy.
“This effort is designed to tackle the key issues around unemployment, to engage our young people, and to make sure our economy is not just crawling or walking, but running,” he added.
Dr Pelpuo also highlighted Ghana’s recent economic struggles, pointing to a decline in its performance compared to other African nations.
“If you look at GDP growth data in Africa, Ghana was once ranked around number eight. Then we slipped to number ten. Côte d’Ivoire and other countries were behind us, but now two countries have overtaken us,” he lamented.
He stressed the urgent need for Ghana to regain its competitive edge.
“We are struggling to maintain even the tenth position. Over the last eight or nine years, Ghana’s growth has not been outstanding. We have fallen far behind, and we need to pick up pace and reclaim our position as one of the best-developed countries in Africa.”
Dr Pelpuo concluded by linking job creation directly to economic recovery.
“You cannot get that done if you don’t get people engaged and working. And working means expanding the economy. When you create opportunities for the economy to grow, you unlock the potential for a good, sustainable growth pattern,” he said.
