Government pledges to settle NIA staff arrears by August following strike suspension

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has assured its staff that all outstanding arrears from January to June 2025 will be fully paid by July, with any remaining payments to be completed by August.

This follows the suspension of an indefinite strike by NIA staff, who were protesting delays in the payment of their Operational Support Allowance.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Dorah Badu Acheampong, Head of Media Relations at the NIA, confirmed the payment timeline.

“The arrears from January to June will be paid in July. Staff should expect payments to continue through July and August,” she stated.

NIA operations resumed on 30th June after several days of disruption caused by the industrial action. The strike was declared unlawful by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on 27th June, citing the lack of mandate by divisional unions to initiate such action.

Following discussions involving the NLC, the Ministry of Finance, and other stakeholders, staff were directed to return to work, with assurances that the payment issues would be resolved.

The strike had brought several services to a standstill, affecting the issuance and processing of national ID cards across the country. With the resumption of work, normal operations have been restored at all NIA service centres.

The government’s commitment to settling the arrears has been welcomed by staff, although many are closely monitoring progress to ensure timelines are met.
