Government to launch $1bn Ghana-UAE innovation and technology hub at Dawa



The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has announced the launch of a $1 billion Ghana-UAE innovation and technology hub.

The hub is expected to host global tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and more. It will also nurture local tech companies into global companies as well.

The sector minister, Samuel George made this revelation at the Mobex Africa Partnership Day. Mr. George believes the initiative which will be located at Dawa, will consolidate efforts in making the country a technology hub in Africa.

“From establishing last mile connectivity in rural communities to the launch of $1 billion Ghana UAE innovation and technology hub in Dawa, Ningo, to host the African headquarters of global giants, like Huawei, Samsung, Apple, Google and more.”

He furthered that “while we believe it will also host homegrown talents like Mobex, Margins, Nsano, Hubtel and others,” emphasising the role of the hub in scaling up local tech companies into competitive companies on the global scene.

He also stated that government will not relent on their promise to upscale the digital economy.

“Here in Ghana the reset is already underway, we are implementing critical components of our digital Ghana agenda.”

The Chief of Staff at the presidency, Julius Debrah expressed optimism about the government’s digital policies.

According to him, the government expects to harness about $2billion in tech exports in the short to medium term.

“Collectively, these priorities will create an estimated 200,000 direct digital jobs by 2028 and position Ghana as West Africa’s leading digital hub, contributing over 2.0 billion dollars in annual digital exports.”

Meanwhile, George Spencer Quaye, CEO of Mobex Africa called for effective partnerships to develop the technology ecosystem.

He was of the view that consolidating strengths within the African region will make the continent a tech hub.

The Mobex Africa Partnership Day gathered policy makers and players in the technology ecosystem to deliberate on collaborations on the advancement of Africa’s Digital Future. The ceremony also celebrated a decade of championing digital transformation by Mobex Africa
