The Western North Regional Police Command has arrested two staff members of the Sefwi Bekwai STEM Senior High School at Awaso over the alleged theft of food items meant for students.

In a statement shared on social media, the Ghana Police Service said the suspects, identified as matron Bennedicta Nyamadi and cook Rahel Kyeremateng, were arrested on December 23, 2025, after intelligence was received the previous night.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects conspired to steal food items from the school food store and kept them at the residence of one of the suspects with the intention of selling them later,” the police said.

A joint team of police officers, the area Member of Parliament and the Municipal Chief Executive searched Kyeremateng’s residence at Sefwi Atronsu, where large quantities of food items were retrieved.

The items include 21 bags of rice, sacks of gari, maize and millet, beans, sugar, cartons of milk, cooking oil, tomato paste and tins of canned mackerel.

During interrogation, police said Kyeremateng “mentioned Bennedicta Nyamadi as the source of the items,” leading to her arrest at the school.

Meanwhile, the police noted that “efforts are underway to locate and arrest an assistant matron, Hannah Dufie, who is reported to have taken part in the crime but is currently at large.” Investigations are ongoing.

Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Prof Kwasi Henry Prempeh, has clarified that proposals to extend the presidential term to five years will not affect the current president, stressing that constitutional mandates cannot be altered after an election has taken place.

In an interview with JoyNews, Prof Prempeh said any such amendment, even if approved, would only apply in future electoral cycles.

“It’s not possible. He was elected under a constitution that gives him only four years. You cannot change his term midstream,” he stated.

He explained that the committee deliberately avoided inserting a special carve-out in the final report, despite initially considering it.

“In an earlier version of the report, for the avoidance of doubt, we had stated that this would take effect after this term,” he said.

According to him, that language was eventually removed to prevent misinterpretation.

“Some felt that if we specified it only for this recommendation, it might suggest the rest would apply immediately. So we left it out,” Prof Prempeh explained.

He said the legal position remains clear regardless of the wording, noting that constitutional changes cannot retroactively alter the terms under which an officeholder was elected.

Prof Kwasi Henry Prempeh has explained why the Constitution Review Committee chose not to explicitly state that a proposed five-year presidential term would take effect after the current administration, saying the omission was deliberate and procedural.

Speaking to JoyNews monitored by MyNewsGh, the CRC Chairman said the committee initially included specific language to avoid confusion but later reconsidered its approach.

“We had said clearly that it would take effect after this, just for the avoidance of doubt,” he noted.

He said internal discussions raised concerns that isolating one recommendation could create unintended interpretations.

“There was a view that if we said that only with respect to this recommendation, it would appear the rest would not apply,” Prof Prempeh said.

As a result, the committee opted for a uniform application of its proposals. “So we said no, everything applies after. We didn’t need to be that specific,” he explained.

Prof Prempeh acknowledged that the decision has generated debate but maintained that the legal reality remains unchanged.

“It turns out it’s causing heat,” he said, adding that the controversy does not alter the constitutional principle governing presidential terms.

Prof Henry Kwasi Prempeh says Ghana’s recent political and constitutional experiences heavily shaped the committee’s recommendations, making it impossible to simply recycle earlier proposals.

In his JoyNews interview, the CRC Chairman said the country has encountered situations that were not contemplated when earlier reviews were conducted.

“When the earlier reports were written, we had never experienced an election petition,” he noted. “Since then, we’ve had two.”

He added that Ghana has also witnessed developments that tested constitutional provisions in real time.

“We’ve had the death of a president in office and seen how succession works. We’ve experienced a hung Parliament,” Prof Prempeh said.

According to him, the removal of constitutional office holders and growing democratic tensions in the region further altered the context.

“You couldn’t just take a report off the shelf and say now is the moment,” he said.

He also pointed to global democratic pressures as a factor. “Democracy was not backsliding the way we’re seeing now. The region wasn’t experiencing this level of turbulence,” he explained.

These realities, Prof Prempeh said, compelled the committee to rethink how the Constitution should respond to present-day governance challenges.

Items retrieved included twenty-one 50 kg bags of rice, four sacks of gari, two sacks of maize, one and a half bags of millet, one bag of sugar, three bags of beans, forty large tins of tomato paste, four cartons of milk, six gallons of cooking oil, and fifty four tins of canned mackerel. The total value of the items is yet to be determined.

During interrogation, suspect Rahel Kyeremateng mentioned suspect Bennedicta Nyamadi as the source of the items. This led to the arrest of suspect Bennedicta Nyamadi at the school premises.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate and arrest an assistant matron, Hannah Dufie, who is reported to have taken part in the crime but is currently at large.

The Ministry of Finance and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) have reached an agreement on matters related to Ghana’s US$750 million facility signed in 2022.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced the development in a social media post, stating that the issues surrounding the facility have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.

“The Government of the Republic of Ghana, acting through the Ministry of Finance, and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) are pleased to announce the successful resolution of the issues surrounding the US$750 million facility signed in 2022 to the satisfaction of both parties,” he wrote.

According to the minister, the outcome allows the Ministry of Finance and Afreximbank to maintain their working relationship going forward.

He added that the resolution is “enabling both parties to continue to partner for Ghana’s development agenda.”

The facility, which was signed in 2022, had been the subject of discussions between the government and the bank.

Forson’s statement indicates that those discussions have now concluded with an agreement acceptable to both sides.

Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has dismissed claims that fellow musicians deliberately attack Shatta Wale, insisting that no Ghanaian artiste, including himself, initiates unprovoked criticism against the outspoken musician.

Speaking in an interview with Headless YouTuber monitored by MyNewsGh, Stonebwoy questioned the long-standing narrative that Shatta Wale is constantly being targeted by his peers.

“Which artist attacks Shatta Wale? Who wakes up in the morning, unprovoked, picks a camera and starts talking about Shatta Wale?” he asked. “I don’t think there’s anybody.”

According to Stonebwoy, any public comment made by artistes about Shatta Wale is usually in response to something he has already said.

“Should anybody say anything, it will be like a response to what he has said,” he explained. “So I tell you for free, no human being is attacking Shatta Wale, not me.”

He challenged critics to point out any instance where he had spoken about Shatta Wale without provocation.

“Point at one interview where I’ve gone unprovoked, where I’m not replying to something that has already been said, and say I’m causing a rift or beef,” Stonebwoy stated. “I don’t think any artiste does that.”
