‘It won’t deter me’ – Hawa Koomson vows to stay in politics despite assault

Former Awutu-Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson has declared that the violent assault she endured during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun will not force her out of politics.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Wednesday, the embattled former Fisheries Minister framed the attack as evidence of her political influence, asserting that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) perceives her as a strategic threat.

Madam Koomson doubled down on her claim that the July 11 attack, where she was kicked, stomped was politically motivated.

“I know I’m a threat to the NDC. That’s why they keep planning against me,” she said, alleging that her ability to mobilize voters unnerves her opponents.

Viral videos showed her being targeted by a coordinated group who allegedly called her by name before assaulting her at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.

The former MP, who suffered injuries to her wrist and groin, insisted the ordeal has only strengthened her resolve.

She said this assault will make me stronger, dismissing the notion that she may quit politics because of this.

The former MP linked her perseverance to broader gender equity goals, asking, “If violence like this goes unchecked, how will women be encouraged to enter politics?”
