In a heartfelt tribute at the Night of Memories and Reflections on Saturday, August 9, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation has honoured the late Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, one of the eight victims of the recent helicopter crash.
The Ministry’s Chief Director, Suweibah Adam, described the minister as a dedicated leader whose exceptional work ethic and punctuality left an indelible mark on the nation.
“Punctuality was his trademark,” she said, recalling how the minister would consistently arrive at work between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. to address official emails and critical correspondences before the day’s engagements began.
This ability to balance his demanding roles at the Ministry, Parliament, and the Presidency without showing signs of fatigue earned him the admiration of colleagues and partners.
The Chief Director also praised his accommodating nature and respect for all Ministry stakeholders. “He inspired the youth on public sector management, and the impact of his leadership will continue to be felt through the numerous national programmes and initiatives he helped shape,” she added.
Murtala Muhammed was among eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.
The officials were reportedly en route to Obuasi to attend an event aimed at combating illegal mining, known as galamsey.
The other victims were:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
- Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC
Also on board the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter were the crew members:
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
The government has announced the burial rites for the two Muslim victims of the crash, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.
In accordance with Islamic tradition, Janazah prayers will be held on Sunday, August 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra. The burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Military Cemetery, Accra.
An inter-denominational state funeral for all eight victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square, providing a final opportunity for the nation to honour their memories and mourn their collective loss.
