Mr Drew warns DopeNation over comments on ‘This Year’ songwriting credit

Ghanaian singer Mr Drew has cautioned music duo DopeNation against mentioning his name in interviews, accusing them of disrespecting his brand.

His reaction follows claims by the twin brothers, B2 and Twist, that they co-wrote and produced his hit song ‘This Year’ but were never acknowledged for their contribution.

In a conversation with Headless YouTuber, DopeNation criticised artistes who fail to credit those who work behind the scenes once their songs become hits.

They cited Mr Drew and Sefa as examples of artistes who did not acknowledge their contributions despite helping to write and produce songs for them.

According to the duo, Mr Drew only brought “scribbled lyrics and no clear structure” when he came to the studio to record ‘This Year’. They claimed they had to guide him through their recording process and help turn the rough idea into a complete song.

“It got to a time, you produce and artistes don’t go to acknowledge you as the producer or even as a co-writer on the song. That is a big deal for us because we are about the work. There are a cluster of artistes who have done some in time. There’s Mr Drew and there’s Sefa; these artistes are people we sat down and write songs and everything in the room.

“They know how we did it but as they went out, they never acknowledged DopeNation… when he got to the studio, he had just scribbled words, he did not have the actual words for the song so we had to take him through our process of recording,” DopeNation said.

Mr Drew, clearly displeased with the remarks, responded on X on 29th July 2025, warning the duo not to speak about him again in interviews and accusing them of throwing “unnecessary jabs”.

“Yo @GhDopeNation I love what yall do but don’t disrespect me or my brand .. you could have had your interview without mentioning my name .. next time you go interview wey you mention my name you go hear am .. bunch of lame guys throwing tantrums,” Mr Drew wrote.

Released in 2020, ‘This Year’ became one of Mr Drew’s biggest songs, gaining massive airplay and streaming numbers while dominating charts in Ghana. It is widely regarded as one of the tracks that solidified his status as a hitmaker.
