The Minister for Health, Kwabena Minta Akandoh, has announced a boost in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) revenue.
According to him, this follows the government’s bold decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy. He made the remarks at the Government’s Accountability Series on Friday.
According to the Minister, the revenue of the NHIS for 2025 has surged to an unprecedented GH₵9.76 billion, up from a capped allocation of GH₵6.52 billion in 2024.
This marks an impressive increase of GH₵3.26 billion, which he described as a “game-changer” in advancing Ghana’s journey towards universal health coverage.
“This is the government fulfilling its promise to prioritise the health of every citizen,” Mr Akandoh stated, highlighting that the additional funding has enabled the NHIS to expand its coverage, improve benefit packages, and channel resources directly to frontline healthcare services.
He revealed that allocations for claims payments have increased from 56.2% in 2024 to 65% in 2025, with plans to reach 75% by 2026. As part of the commitment to prompt payments, the Minister confirmed that all NHIS claims arrears, totalling GH₵603 million as of December 2024, have been fully cleared.
“In the first half of 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed over GH₵1.38 billion to healthcare providers, reflecting a system that is now stronger, more responsive, and more reliable than ever,” he added.
Mr Akando disclosed that the NHIS covers 15,670,000 Ghanaians, an increase of over 670,000, “Ladies and gentlemen, today, 15.67 million Ghanaians are enrolled in the NHIS – an increase of over 670,000 from last year. What this means is that 670,000 more Ghanaians are now benefiting from health insurance coverage.”
He noted that, under the directive of President John Mahama, the government swiftly prioritised domestic resources to fill funding gaps. He also disclosed ongoing collaboration with private partners through Public-Private Partnership arrangements aimed at revitalising health infrastructure.
