NIA vows to prosecute Ghanaians who vouch for foreigners in Ghana Card registration

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians who unlawfully vouch for foreign nationals in their bid to acquire Ghana Cards, announcing that such individuals will face prosecution.

According to the NIA, it is a criminal offence for any Ghanaian to guarantee the nationality of a non-citizen to facilitate their registration onto the national identification system.

The Authority stressed that the practice undermines the integrity of the Ghana Card scheme and national security.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, 4 August 2025, the NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, disclosed that legal proceedings were already underway against several individuals implicated in such acts.

“Out of the 20 people currently being prosecuted, some are Ghanaians who vouched for foreign nationals,” he revealed. “Our system is designed in such a way that identifying these individuals is quite straightforward.”

Mr Darlas further condemned the practice of turning the vouching process into a commercial venture, cautioning those involved to desist immediately.

“To those of you vouching for people you don’t even know—just to make money—be warned: we are coming for you,” he declared.

The NIA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of the national identity system and called on the public to report any irregularities or suspicious conduct associated with Ghana Card registration.
