President John Dramani Mahama, together with top government officials, joined a massive gathering of Christians at the forecourt of the State House to pray and give thanks to God. The event also served to seek divine guidance for national peace and prosperity.
The service was attended by prominent religious leaders from both orthodox and charismatic denominations. Among them were Cardinal Peter Appiah-Turkson; Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, Founder of Action Chapel; Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah; Mrs Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, President of Aglow International; Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, Founder of the Lighthouse Chapel; Bishop Charles Agyinasare, Founder of Perez Chapel; and Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of The Church of Pentecost.
Gospel musicians who ministered at the event included Joe Mettle, Jack Alolome, the Tagoe Sisters, Paris, and Francis Amo.
President Mahama’s declaration of July 1 as National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day highlights Ghana’s strong tradition of religious tolerance and harmony.

He praised the nation’s enduring peace and stability, attributing it to divine favour, persistent prayer, and responsible leadership. He called on all Ghanaians to observe the day with reverence, sincerity, and unity of purpose.
Describing the occasion as both symbolic and significant, the President emphasised the need for spiritual reflection, national gratitude, and renewed cohesion.
He noted that addressing Ghana’s challenges—such as youth unemployment, economic hardship, moral decline, and environmental degradation—requires not only policy and debate but also a sincere return to prayer and dependence on divine guidance.
This year’s event was held under the theme, “Reflect, Reset, and Renewal for National Prosperity.” It encouraged both individual and collective introspection, calling on citizens to assess their journey, renew their commitment to national development, and pursue peace, progress, and shared prosperity together.
