The People’s National Party (PNP) has rejected President John Mahama’s proposal to establish a fund for the dependents of the eight people who died in the recent military helicopter crash, calling the plan “inadequate and unsustainable.”
On Tuesday, August 12, President John Mahama announced the creation of a dedicated fund to support the needs of the children of the eight deceased.
The President made the announcement while attending the funeral rites for the late Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna.
While expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the party warned that such a fund could be depleted, discontinued, or politicised, reducing it to “a token gesture that fades away with time.”
Chairperson and Founder of the party, Janet Asana Nabla, in a statement on Wednesday, August 13, suggested that instead, the PNP would want the urgent passage of a “National Heroes Dependants Protection Act”, a permanent, state-backed welfare system enshrined in law, funded through the Consolidated Fund, and administered by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
According to her, the proposed legislation would guarantee regular stipends for widows and dependants, safeguard benefits from political interference, ensure full education support for children, prioritise their public sector employment, and maintain transparency to prevent abuse.
“This is not charity; it is a solemn duty,” she said. “The families of those who paid the ultimate price must not be left at the mercy of politics or fading public sympathy.”
