The leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) held a successful meeting with executives of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League (WPL) clubs on Monday, July 21, 2025, as part of preparations for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
The high-level engagement was attended by President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo and members of the Executive Council.
The session also brought together the Domestic Leagues Committee and the Referees Committee, alongside club executives, to reflect on the previous season, assess progress, and deliberate on ways to enhance the women’s game in the new campaign.
In his opening remarks, President Simeon-Okraku commended the clubs for their commitment and professionalism throughout the 2024/25 season, stressing the importance of collaboration as the women’s game continues to evolve.
“This platform is very important. It’s a feedback session for our clubs, what you saw last season and what you think can be done better as we continue to seek improvement,” the President stated.
“We want to thank all of you for an amazing season. To the Domestic Leagues Committee, the staff of the Football Association and most importantly the teams, we say a big thank you. We do not have a perfect situation yet, but we will continue to work on improving the game on all levels. From enhanced matchday protocols to standardized player contracts, and other policies aimed at raising the bar of the women’s league.”
The meeting also addressed key areas such as league compliance, officiating, support, club licensing and the impact of new initiatives introduced by the GFA to accelerate the growth of women’s football in Ghana.
Chairman of the Domestic Leagues Committee, Dr. Anthony Aubynn, expressed his satisfaction with the steady progress of the women’s game, citing the recent performances of the Black Queens at the ongoing CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as evidence of the investments and strategic planning made in recent years.
“Women’s football has seen significant improvement, and the performance of the Black Queens is a clear testament to the level of investment made in the women’s game. I commend the leadership of the GFA, particularly the President, for the vision and foresight,” Dr. Aubynn remarked.
The session concluded with an open forum where club executives offered suggestions and shared insights on how to further enhance the league’s structure, visibility, and sustainability.
The 2025/26 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League is scheduled to kick off on October 31, 2025, and will run through to April 27, 2026.
