Re-run in Ablekuma North unwarranted – Baffuor Awuah

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffuor Awuah, has criticised the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-run the 2024 parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

He described the move as unnecessary and detrimental to Ghana’s democratic development.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, the MP argued that re-running the polls in the selected polling stations is not the best solution, “It is not about going for a re-run, it is about developing principles and values in our democratic space.”

He noted that the EC’s inconsistent handling of the matter has raised concerns among stakeholders and may erode public confidence in the electoral process.

The controversy stems from the EC’s decision to re-run the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North, following a High Court directive to collate results from 62 polling stations that were initially left out.

The EC has since stated it is able to recount results from 43 of those stations but insists that a re-run is necessary in the remaining 19 due to unresolved issues.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is challenging the decision, has hinted at legal action, arguing that the EC had previously signalled readiness to declare the results after securing adequate security arrangements.
