Tanko-Computer: Ghana seeing benefits of improved leadership

0

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, says Ghana is beginning to reap the benefits of improved leadership and sound economic management under the current administration.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s current affairs programme The Big Issue, he drew a sharp contrast between the present government’s approach and that of the previous administration, which he accused of corruption and poor crisis management, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, weak leadership in the past plunged the country into severe economic hardship, eroding public confidence and worsening living conditions for ordinary Ghanaians.

Rashid Tanko-Computer maintained that the situation has changed, insisting that current leadership is delivering visible results. He pointed to greater economic stability, easing inflation, and heightened consumer activity in major markets as signs of recovery.

He argued that government policies are beginning to ease the cost of living and restore confidence in Ghana’s economic direction.

“Under their regime, we saw that corruption and covid-19 were equal to each other. It was terrible. Now in Ghana, we have gotten better leadership now. Leadership is about everything. We have been able to stabilize the economy for the good people of Ghana.

“Inflation has come down. We all saw what happened at Makola during Christmas. Fire Service had to send their water tanks to water people because of the unprecedented crowd because prices of goods were down. People were there to shop. Did you ever see this in the last eight years?” he said.

In a statement issued on January 10, 2026, the Accra Regional Police said the arrests followed weeks of intelligence gathering linked to a robbery at a house in Peduase, Aburi, on November 29, 2025. The suspects reportedly used firearms to rob residents of mobile phones, jewellery and cash.

Police explained that the breakthrough came on January 6, 2026, when officers from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, working with Accra-based officers, arrested a suspect identified as Kofi Ishmael at Avenor in Accra. During questioning, he admitted taking part in the robbery and led police to the alleged leader of the gang, Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Star Boy.

Kwame Bediako was later arrested at Ablekuma Agape. A search at his residence led to the discovery of a pump-action gun hidden in a fence wall, along with four cartridges. Police said he also admitted to being involved in several robbery incidents.

The suspects were allegedly planning another robbery when they were arrested.

The seven suspects currently in police custody include Salia Mohammed, also known as Kwaku Nuah; Kofi Ishmael, also known as Ishmael Addo or Kofi Ketewa; Kwame Bediako, also known as Star Boy or Nkokorpor; Kwadwo Kalovi, also called Aticho; Mumuni Abdul Razak, known as Mogambo; Kwasi Akambuley, also called Kwasi Fresh; and Kwame Bonsu, known as Killer Ntua. One of the suspects is receiving medical treatment while in custody.

Police say the suspects have also been linked to earlier robbery cases, including attacks on market women and motorists, as well as a robbery that led to the death of a driver. Some of them are believed to have jumped bail in previous cases still before the courts.

Items retrieved during the operation include firearms, ammunition, machetes, knives, mobile phones and other items believed to be stolen. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices who are still on the run.

The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to fighting crime and encouraged anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station.

UG Fee Hike: Apaak meets stakeholders to resolve impasse

0

The Ministry of Education has convened a high-level stakeholder meeting to address the ongoing dispute over recent University of Ghana fee increases amid students’ disapproval and regulatory intervention.

The meeting, held in Accra on Thursday, January 8, 2026, brought together the University of Ghana Governing Council Chairperson Marrita Brew, Vice-Chancellor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, leaders of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) and Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), as well as Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) Director-General, Prof. Abdulai Jinapor.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, who has been tasked by the Education Minister to lead engagements aimed at finding a legally compliant and broadly acceptable resolution.

The meeting follows weeks of intense backlash from students and parents after reports of academic fee increases of about 25%, with some first-year students facing hikes of up to 34%. Continuing students were reported to be paying roughly 27% more.

Dr. Apaak earlier explained that the ministry’s intervention was unavoidable.

“The level of public outcry from students and parents was such that we couldn’t have ignored it,” he said on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News.

He stressed that any fee adjustment must comply with the Fees and Charges Act, noting that Parliament had not approved an increase.

“Given that we work with laws and there are processes and procedures, the best thing was to instruct GTEC to call the university to stay any increase,” he added.

The University of Ghana, through Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Awandare, has maintained that the disputed charges were largely third-party fees approved by student leadership rather than management-imposed academic fees.

“What is in the report is about third-party fees which were imposed by the student leadership,” he said, arguing that rising utility costs made some adjustments unavoidable.

GTEC, however, has taken a firm regulatory position. In a January 5, 2026, letter to the Vice-Chancellor, the commission ordered an immediate reversal of all fee increases and newly introduced charges made without statutory approval.

It directed refunds for final-year students who overpaid and credits for continuing students, while reverting all dues, including SRC and GRASSAG charges, to last academic year’s approved rates.

“You are hereby requested to provide GTEC with evidence of compliance not later than January 12, 2026,” the commission warned, cautioning that failure would attract serious regulatory sanctions.

The UGSRC has previously attempted to justify some third-party fee adjustments, citing administrative errors, higher utility bills and the need to finance a proposed SRC hostel project.

SRC President Larbi Ofori Richmond said an additional ₵200 levy was intended to support long-term accommodation needs, adding that the planned facility could house about 15,000 students at affordable rates.

Thursday’s meeting is expected to harmonise these competing positions and ease tensions as stakeholders work toward a solution that balances student welfare and adherence to the law.

Rising water costs strain households despite falling inflation – COPEC

0

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has urged the government to focus on essential services affecting the cost of living, even as some economic indicators show improvement.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, January 10, Mr Amoah acknowledged that certain prices are falling, but warned that rising costs of basic services, particularly water supply, continue to strain households.

He highlighted that in many communities across Accra and other parts of the country, taps do not run regularly, forcing residents to rely on private water tanker operators to meet their daily needs. According to him, the expenses associated with purchasing water from these services have significantly increased household costs.

“While other things are coming down, there is also the need not to lose focus on the others that we seem to be paying more for. There is the issue of water supply within the country. It is not untrue that for most communities in Accra here and other parts of the country, the taps are simply not flowing. And so people have resorted to buying water from these truck guys. It makes the cost of living quite expensive. I think that whiles we target the micro indicators, the very things that also affect the pocket or livelihoods of Ghanaians, we should not lose focus on them, one being water,” he said.

Mr Amoah’s comments come as consumers continue to grapple with the rising costs of essential utilities, highlighting the gap between headline economic improvements and day-to-day household realities.

AG lied about Ofori-Atta’s US detention – Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has called on the Attorney‑General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, to provide accurate information regarding former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori‑Atta’s visa status in the United States.

This comes after Dr Ayine stated that Ofori‑Atta did not merely overstay his visa, but that it had been formally revoked, noting that U.S. authorities had initially given him until November 29, 2024, to leave the country. He further asserted that the revocation was deliberate, tied to ongoing investigations, and not a routine immigration matter.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s current affairs programme The Big Issue on Saturday, January 10, Haruna Mohammed insisted that the Attorney‑General’s explanation was inaccurate and misleading.

Haruna Mohammed emphasized that government officials have a responsibility to be transparent, arguing that misstatements on such matters undermine public trust and create unnecessary confusion about official processes.

According to him, Ofori‑Atta’s visa was not revoked but had simply expired, and he had applied for an extension.

“The Attorney General has not been truthful to us, saying that his visa was revoked. His visa was never revoked. It had expired and he wrote for extension. At the time that he was arrested ICE did not know he was applying. In the US, if your visa is revoked, they will pick you out. How can his visa be revoked, then they will still leave him or even give him a deadline? The Attorney General should be very truthful to us, we need accurate information,” he said.

Journalist Assault: WAES demands names of interdicted GNFS officers

The West Africa Editors Society (WAES) has urged that the identities of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officers interdicted over the assault of a journalist be made public, emphasising that transparency is crucial for accountability and the protection of press freedom.

In a statement dated Friday, January 10 and signed by the society’s Interim President, Emmanuel Dogbevi, WAES said while it welcomed assurances by President John Dramani Mahama that officers involved in the assault of journalist Samuel Addo of the Class Media Group had been interdicted, the lack of details surrounding the action raised serious concerns.

The journalist was allegedly assaulted by a group of fire officers while covering a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region on Monday, January 5, 2026. A video circulating on social media showed several officers physically attacking the journalist at the scene.

WAES noted that although the interdiction of the officers was a positive step, the absence of information on who the officers are and how many have been sanctioned falls short of the transparency required in a democratic system.

The editors’ body further expressed concern over what it described as conflicting accounts from the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, who initially denied that the journalist was assaulted, claiming only his mobile phone was seized, and later suggested that the alleged attackers were not fire service personnel.

According to WAES, publicly identifying the interdicted officers would help resolve these contradictions and assure the public that the matter is being handled honestly.

The Society also questioned the number of officers interdicted, noting that the journalist reported being assaulted by more than ten officers, making it necessary for authorities to clarify whether all those involved have been sanctioned.

WAES stressed that failure to deal openly with the case could encourage impunity and undermine confidence in institutions responsible for safeguarding citizens and journalists.

“It is our considered view that impunity thrives in darkness,” the statement said, adding that handling the matter transparently would strengthen accountability and enhance the safety of journalists in Ghana.

He described Bryan Acheampong as the incoming President of the Republic of Ghana.

“Your Excellency, the incoming President of the Republic of Ghana. I want to speak Dagbanli, so I wish someone would sit close to His Excellency so he can understand everything I say,” he said.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, an NPP presidential hopeful, visited Tamale as part of his campaign tour of the region ahead of the NPP presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.

Manasseh Azure Awuni has also provided details about the immigration and legal issues surrounding the arrest of former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He revealed that Mr. Ofori-Atta travelled out of Ghana on January 4, 2025.

“He departed from Terminal 3 of Kotoka International Airport on United Airlines Flight 997 to Washington, D.C.,” Manasseh wrote in social media post sighted by MyNewsGh.

According to him, the former minister travelled on a Ghanaian passport with valid visas.

“He held valid visas to the UK, Canada and the United States,” he stated.

Manasseh shared specific information about the validity of those visas.

“His U.S. visa was due to expire on February 14, 2026. His UK visa expires in 2032, while his Canadian visa expires in 2031,” he said.

However, he revealed new information from Ghana’s Attorney-General.

“The Attorney-General disclosed that his U.S. visa was revoked in July 2025 and he was asked to leave the country by November 29, 2025,” Manasseh wrote.

He also linked the arrest to the SML scandal in Ghana.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta has been charged with corruption-related offences in Ghana over the SML scandal,” he stated.

Manasseh added that Ghana has taken steps to bring him back.

“The government of Ghana has requested his extradition from the United States,” he wrote.

He further revealed a past conversation with a source close to the former minister.

“In July 2025, a source close to him told me he had no intention of returning to Ghana to face justice,” Manasseh stated.

According to him, Mr. Ofori-Atta is expected to appear in court in the U.S.

“He is expected to appear in court on January 20, 2026,” he added.

They gave him until November 29 to leave the US

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has stated that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta did not overstay his visa in the United States, contrary to public speculation, but rather had it formally revoked by U.S. authorities.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr Ayine said the issue surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s stay in the United States had been widely misunderstood and needed clarification.

“I want Ghanaians to know that he just didn’t overstay his visa. The visa was actually revoked,” Dr Ayine said. “They gave him up to November 29 of 2024 to leave the United States. He did not.”

He stressed that the matter was not about an expired visa, insisting that the revocation was deliberate and officially communicated.

“This is not exactly about immigration. His visa is not expired. It expires in February. No, it was revoked. I am telling you this on authority,” he stated.

Dr Ayine disclosed that the decision followed sustained engagement between Ghanaian authorities and their counterparts in the United States, particularly in connection with an extradition request initiated by his office.

“The extradition request that I sent was in respect of the OSP – the SME matter,” he explained. “I have been working with the Americans diligently on him. And the visa was revoked. And that is how come that he lost his immigration status in the United States.”

According to the Attorney General, the revocation of the visa directly affected Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal standing in the U.S., leading to the current developments surrounding his status.
