This Saturday on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panelists are discussing the unfolding removal process of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, including her recent press conference where she accused the inquiry committee of procedural breaches and announced applications for judicial review to declare the proceedings void.
During her first public address since being suspended, Justice Torkornoo highlighted multiple violations in the in-camera proceedings, including denial of legal representation, non-disclosure of specific charges, and personal indignities like invasive searches and family exclusion.
She condemned the entire process as a “grand conspiracy” that breaches due process and judicial independence.
The suspended Chief Justice has initiated court action to have the committee hearing held in public and to declare the secretive proceedings invalid, arguing Ghana’s Constitution does not permit such opacity or executive.
A few hours after her public address, the Government’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, condemned her public remarks as “most regrettable” but defended the process, stating it aligns fully with constitutional provisions.
Also this week, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, launched a scathing attack on the Electoral Commission (EC), declaring its entire leadership unfit for purpose and calling for their removal.
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the Electoral Commission had failed at its core duty of managing credible elections. He pointed to what he described as a worrying pattern of electoral mismanagement under the current team.
The Bank of Ghana, in a letter dated 19 June 2025, communicated its decision not to confirm the appointments of a fraction of personnel recruited in December 2024, saying the affected persons’ appointments were not successful during the assessment.
According to the BoG, it took the decision after it finalised its staff probation review and exercise, resulting in the majority of these personnel engaged after December 7, 2024.
In a surprising turn of events, the BoG reversed its earlier decision to terminate the appointments of nearly 100 personnel recruited in December 2024, following growing public attention and internal discussions.
The decision, which had initially been justified by the Central Bank as a routine post-probation review, is now shrouded in uncertainty, with the latest move raising questions about the original grounds for the layoffs.
The show will explore the legal and political storm surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension and her recent public address, the rising tension over calls to remove EC leadership, and the controversial reversal of mass terminations at the Bank of Ghana.
