The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others, who died in a helicopter crash near Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, announced the tragic news on Wednesday, August 6, at a press conference and directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased. He also extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved families and the nation.
The other deceased persons include Muniru Mohammed, acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; and Samuel Sarpong, a Vice Chairman of the NDC and a former Kumasi Mayor.
The GAF has named the crew members as Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
In a statement signed by the Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, the tertiary institution paid tribute to the fallen leaders, describing them not only as esteemed public servants but also as contemporaries and personal friends.
“These words resonate deeply as we mourn the loss of Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Murtala Mohammed and the six others who perished,” the statement read.
“As a contemporary and friend, I am deeply saddened by their passing. Their dedication and passion for public service and nation-building were inspiring.”
UPSA extended its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of those who lost their lives in the crash, emphasising the collective grief being felt across the university community.
The statement also included a poignant call to action: “May we honour their memory by ending illegal mining,” reflecting the values and national vision both ministers worked to uphold throughout their public service careers.
UPSA expressed its deepest sympathies to all those affected by the tragedy, particularly the bereaved families, the political establishment, and the Government of Ghana.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected – their families, political party, and the government. May God console us all with hope in the assurance of the resurrection morning. I pray that God grants their families strength and comfort during this trying time. May God/Allah grant them eternal rest.”
