The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its readiness to contest the Akwatia by-election on September 2, while casting doubt on the motives behind the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) approach to recent parliamentary polls.
The opposition party suggested the NPP’s decision not to field a candidate in the Tamale Central by-election, following the death of MP Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed in the 6 August helicopter crash, was less about respect and more about political strategy.
In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC commended the NPP’s non-participation in Tamale Central, calling it “the best decision they have taken in recent times.”
However, the statement claimed the move was intended to avoid a possible defeat and generate public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia contest.
“This is not the first time that a political party has refused to contest in a by-election,” the NDC noted, pointing out its own decision not to run in Ejisu after the death of John Kumah, while also reminding the public that Akwatia’s seat had been under legal challenge before the passing of Ernest Kumi.
The party also cautioned voters against accepting the NPP’s announcements at face value, referencing previous incidents where the ruling party reversed its stance.
“In the Ablekumah North rerun, the NPP declared that they were not contesting, but in fact, they were the first to hit the ground,” Mr Gunn said.
He further expressed condolences to the family of the late Ernest Kumi and to the relatives of the “gallant eight heroes” whose loss the country continues to mourn.
Mr Gunn called on NDC supporters to remain measured in their public comments during this period of national grief.
“Let us be mindful of our comments in this time of mourning,” he urged.
