Zuarungu SHS violence: Students burn shops after ethnic scuffle over stolen phone

Some students of Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East Region have burnt provision shops belonging to private individuals trading on the school’s campus.

The shops, which appeared to have been fully stocked, were burnt to ashes after violence erupted between students of two ethnic groups.

It is unclear at the moment why the students targeted these shops.

However, JoyNews understands that Frafra, Kusasi, and Mamprusi students were involved in a scuffle over a stolen mobile phone on Saturday.

The scuffle degenerated into serious violence, forcing the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, to close down the school on Sunday afternoon.

When JoyNews visited the school this morning, no students were on campus, but debris from the destroyed shops remained.

School authorities have not officially commented on the incident, as they were locked in a meeting at the time of our visit.
