Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi mine outlines a 5-year ‘Make Obuasi Great Again’ vision

The historic Obuasi Mine continues to be one of the richest gold mines in the world and has often been described as a jewel in AngloGold Ashanti’s crown.

Despite its troubled recent history—characterised by a care and maintenance phase in 2014 and persistent threats from illegal mining—the mine remains an important national asset and a major contributor to Ghana’s economic growth.

The recalibration of the Obuasi Mine in 2019 revitalised the local economy and brought renewed hope to the people of Obuasi, who recognised the return of the town’s economic lifeline.

Determined to correct past missteps, the Mine introduced a transformational three-year Social Management Plan, followed by a comprehensive 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which has achieved significant success since its launch in 2022.

The Emergence of Sam Boakye Pobee

Following the elevation of former Managing Director Eric Asubonteng to Senior Vice President for Joint Ventures at AngloGold Ashanti, the Obuasi Mine welcomed a new Managing Director, Sam Boakye Pobee, in 2024. He previously held the same role at Iduapriem Mine.

Mr Pobee’s arrival sparked optimism within the mining industry, signalling a potential return to Obuasi’s golden years—marked by strong gold production, motivated employees, and a positive ripple effect on the local economy.

His mission draws inspiration from the era of Dr Sam Jonah, who rose to become Chief Executive Officer of Ashanti Goldfields Corporation. Dr Jonah was widely credited as the driving force behind Ashanti’s transformation from a single mine in Ghana into the world’s second-largest gold producer.

Under his leadership, annual production rose from 240,000 ounces to over 1.6 million ounces. He also led the company’s listing as the first operating African firm on the New York Stock Exchange.

The MOGA Vision: Making Obuasi Great Again

In a town hall meeting with community leaders, Mr Pobee unveiled the “MOGA” vision—Making Obuasi Great Again—anchored on four cardinal pillars: Production, Sustainability, People, and Safety. This vision aligns with the Mine’s goal of becoming a leading mining company in Ghana and fulfilling its purpose of “mining to empower people and advance societies.”

1. Production
Mr Pobee emphasised the goal of increasing production levels by leveraging emerging technologies to unlock additional mineral resources.

2. People
He underscored that productivity cannot be achieved without motivated employees equipped with the right tools. “We are committed to boosting worker morale and ensuring they have the resources they need,” he said.
“These efforts will position Obuasi as the employer of choice in every function across the mining industry.”

3. Sustainability
Sustainability remains central to AngloGold Ashanti’s operations in Obuasi. The company aims to strengthen community relations, mine responsibly, and prioritise community well-being.
Mr Pobee noted that the objective is to make the Obuasi Mine the industry benchmark for Environment, Social, Governance (ESG), and Security in Ghana—transforming key stakeholders into strategic business partners.

4. Safety
Safety is the Mine’s top priority and first core value. Mr Pobee stressed that the success of the MOGA vision hinges on maintaining a safe working environment.
“Safety is a culture here,” he said, adding that various measures have been implemented to instil this mindset, including transparency initiatives, supervisor retreats, technology integration, and comprehensive training programmes.

“We want to set the pace and become the industry benchmark for occupational health and safety in Ghana,” Mr Pobee affirmed.
