Nigeria’s film and academic communities are in mourning following the death of veteran actor and scholar, Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, popularly known as Kola Oyewo.
He was 80 years old.His passing was confirmed on Friday through a message shared by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, who announced the news on Facebook and paid tribute to his father’s life, describing him as a man of “love, wisdom, strength and kindness.”In the statement, the family expressed deep sorrow over the loss but also gratitude for the long and impactful life he lived.
They noted that his legacy would continue through the memories and influence he left behind in both his family and the wider arts community.
The late actor was widely respected as one of Nigeria’s foremost figures in theatre and performing arts. Over several decades, he built a strong reputation as both a stage performer and an academic, contributing significantly to the growth and preservation of Yoruba theatre.
He also played a major role in mentoring younger actors and promoting Nigerian cultural heritage through his work in classrooms, on stage, and in film productions.
His son appealed for prayers and support for the family during the mourning period, adding that they would continue to celebrate a life dedicated to service, learning, and the arts.Kola Oyewo’s death marks the end of an era in Nigerian theatre, where he stood as a respected voice in both performance and education.
