Media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up about why he left the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo before the event ended.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session over the weekend, Daddy Freeze said he felt the atmosphere of the memorial changed when gospel singer Mercy Chinwo took the stage. The service of songs, which took place in Lagos, drew a large crowd of family members, friends, entertainers, clergy, and other notable personalities who gathered to celebrate the actor’s life and legacy.
According to Daddy Freeze, he expected a more reflective and solemn mood throughout the event. He explained that he prefers softer worship songs and hymns at funeral ceremonies, believing they better suit the occasion.
He claimed that Mercy Chinwo’s performance created an atmosphere that felt more like a concert than a memorial service, prompting him to quietly leave while the event was still ongoing.Questioning the choice of music, Daddy Freeze said he would have preferred slower songs and traditional hymns that encourage reflection and remembrance.
Despite his comments, many gospel artists participated in the service, including Peterson Okopi, Moses Bliss, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir, all of whom paid tribute through music.
His remarks have since sparked conversations online, with some people agreeing that funeral services should maintain a solemn tone, while others argued that celebrating a person’s life through uplifting music can also be an appropriate way to honour the deceased. The discussion highlights the differing views people hold about how memorial services should be conducted, especially when they involve public figures whose lives touched many people.
As reactions continue to pour in, the focus remains on remembering Alex Ekubo and the impact he made within Nigeria’s entertainment industry and beyond.
