South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has urged football fans across Africa and beyond to put politics aside and support one another, stressing that football should be a unifying force.
South Africa’s FIFA World Cup journey began on a disappointing note after a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match. The team also finished the game with only nine players on the pitch following two red cards.
The loss quickly sparked reactions on social media, with many fans from other African countries mocking South Africa’s performance.Much of the criticism was linked to past xenophobic attacks in South Africa that targeted migrants from several African nations, including Nigeria and Ghana. Those incidents drew widespread condemnation across the continent and forced many affected migrants to return to their home countries.
Speaking ahead of South Africa’s upcoming clash with Czechia, Williams appealed for unity among Africans. He encouraged people to look beyond political differences and support each other, emphasizing that Africans are one people and should stand together through both successes and challenges.
According to the goalkeeper, football should bring people together rather than create divisions, and he hopes fans across the continent will embrace a spirit of unity during the World Cup.
