Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker Steve Asare Hackman has been celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the growth of Ghana’s film industry.
The special recognition took place during this year’s Father’s Day celebrations, with actress and producer Dzifa Agbetepey leading the tribute alongside Royal Women in Cinema Ghana.
The event was organized to acknowledge Hackman’s decades of dedication to filmmaking, mentorship, and talent development. Over the years, he has played a significant role in shaping the careers of numerous actors, filmmakers, and industry professionals.
Speaking during the ceremony, Agbetepey expressed heartfelt appreciation for the veteran producer, revealing that he was instrumental in launching her acting career.
She credited him for giving her a major breakthrough role in the film OH Mother, a project she says changed her life and helped establish her place in the industry.
Hackman’s journey in filmmaking began in Liberia during the late 1970s and 1980s before he returned to Ghana in 1989. Bringing with him valuable film equipment and industry experience, he became one of the key figures who helped develop Ghana’s video film sector.Through his company, Hacky Films, he created opportunities for emerging talents and contributed significantly to the expansion of Ghana’s movie industry.
His influence extended beyond filmmaking, as he also served as President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana, where he championed efforts to combat film piracy and protect the rights of creators.
Those who honoured him described him as a mentor, industry pioneer, and father figure whose legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers across Ghana and beyond.
