The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has put its planned introduction of new vehicle licence plates on hold, halting a rollout that had been set for January 2, 2026.
According to the Authority, the pause follows Parliament’s inability to pass amendments to the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which governs the design and required details on licence plates.
Although lawmakers amended the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), the related changes to L.I. 2180 were not completed before Parliament went on recess on Friday, December 19, 2025.
“Until the legislative requirements are fully settled, we are unable to proceed with the rollout of the new RFID-embedded licence plates,” the DVLA stated, adding that the plates are intended to integrate Radio Frequency Identification technology to improve traceability and road safety.
In the interim, the Authority confirmed that vehicles bearing Departure from Port stickers and DV plates may continue to use them.
“Owners of vehicles with DP stickers and DV plates may continue using them until a time limit is communicated by the Authority,” the statement said, while thanking the public for its cooperation.
The development comes as the Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana has moved to court to challenge the planned changes.
BEMENCO Embossment Ltd, together with 26 other companies belonging to the association, filed an injunction application at the High Court in Accra on Monday, December 22, 2025.
The suit seeks to restrain the DVLA from introducing digitalised or new vehicle number plates from January 2026 until the court has determined the case.
