Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Sean Penn is set to direct a new Warner Bros. movie inspired by the experiences of a police officer who responded to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The project, which is yet to receive an official title, will be written and directed by Penn. The filmmaker recently earned critical acclaim for his Oscar-winning role in One Battle After Another.
Actor Bradley Cooper is reportedly being considered for a leading role in the film, although discussions are still ongoing and no official agreement has been reached. While details about the central character remain under wraps, the movie is said to be based on the real-life experiences of a law enforcement officer who was present during the Capitol riot.Penn has previously shown interest in the events surrounding January 6.
In 2022, he attended congressional hearings investigating the attack, where several officers shared emotional accounts of what they endured while defending the Capitol.
Among those who testified were Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, who described the violence and chaos they faced during the riot. Their testimonies highlighted the physical and emotional toll the attack had on first responders.
At the time, Penn said he attended the hearings as an ordinary citizen who wanted to witness the process and see whether accountability would be achieved. The upcoming film is expected to explore the human impact of the Capitol attack through the perspective of a police officer caught in one of the most significant events in recent American political history.
