Veteran Japanese singer, actor, and voice artist Miwa Akihiro has died at the age of 91, bringing to an end an extraordinary career that spanned more than seven decades.
According to his management team, Akihiro passed away peacefully at home on July 20, surrounded by his loved ones after his health declined in recent months. He had gradually reduced his public appearances over the past year due to his age while focusing on regaining his strength.
Before his passing, the legendary entertainer reportedly uttered one final phrase: “Thank you.”His management also revealed a handwritten message he prepared before his death, sharing his lifelong belief that love is the key to creating a better world.”The key to solving all the world’s problems is love. If there is love, war will not occur,” he wrote.
Born in Nagasaki in 1935, Akihiro survived the atomic bombing of the city at the age of 10. The life-changing experience deeply influenced his music, writing, and public advocacy throughout his career.
He began performing as a singer at just 16 years old and later adopted the professional name Miwa Akihiro in 1971. Renowned for his bold stage presence, he frequently appeared in elegant women’s attire and became a respected advocate for LGBTQ rights and equality.
International audiences widely recognized Akihiro for his unforgettable voice performances in Studio Ghibli classics.
He voiced the powerful wolf goddess Moro in Princess Mononoke and later portrayed the Witch of the Waste in Howl’s Moving Castle, earning admiration from animation fans around the world.
Even after suffering a cerebral infarction in 2019, Akihiro remained active through writing, broadcasting, lectures, and other creative pursuits, continuing to inspire audiences with his resilience and message of peace.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his artistic legacy and enduring call for love and compassion will continue to resonate for generations.
