Adekunle Gold Opens Up About Battling Sickle Cell and Dark Thoughts in His 20s

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has shared an emotional story about living with sickle cell disease and the painful moments that once made him wish for death.Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Angela Yee, the Afrobeats star opened up about the stigma he faces whenever people learn about his health condition.

According to Adekunle Gold, many people react with pity or fear, often acting as though he may not survive for long because he is living with sickle cell disease. The singer recalled one of the most difficult moments of his life when he suffered an intense sickle cell crisis at the age of 20.

He said the pain became so unbearable that he prayed for God to take his life.“At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life,” he said, explaining that the pain reached a point where death felt like the only escape. He also spoke about how deeply the experience affected his mother.

Normally, she would discourage him from speaking negatively, but that night, she was too overwhelmed by his suffering to respond the way she usually would.Despite those painful experiences, Adekunle Gold said he is grateful to still be alive and continues to fight through the challenges that come with the condition.

Over the years, the singer has been vocal about raising awareness for sickle cell disease while inspiring fans through his music and personal journey. He is also married to fellow Nigerian music star Simi, whom he has publicly praised on several occasions for her talent and support.
