Parents have voiced strong criticism after singer Caity Baser’s performance at the Youth Beatz music festival in Dumfries, claiming her set contained explicit language and sexual references that were inappropriate for the young audience.
Several parents said they were shocked when the 22-year-old performer allegedly asked the crowd if they had ever had sex with a friend. The audience included children and teenagers, with some families attending with children younger than the festival’s recommended age.
Many parents expected the singer to perform toned-down versions of her songs but were instead surprised by the language and mature themes used during the show. Some chose to leave before the performance ended, saying the content was not suitable for a family-friendly event.
In response to the backlash, Baser said she was saddened to learn that some attendees were upset. She explained that she had repeatedly asked festival organisers whether any part of her performance needed to be censored and was told no changes were necessary.
The singer apologised to anyone who was offended, saying she would have happily adjusted her set if requested. She added that her goal has always been to entertain audiences, empower young women, and spread positivity.
Youth Beatz, one of Scotland’s largest free youth music festivals, attracted around 40,000 attendees over two days.
Alongside Caity Baser, this year’s event featured performances from rapper Example and members of the boy band The Vamps.Festival organisers acknowledged receiving a small number of complaints and said they are taking the concerns seriously.
While describing the overall event as a success with largely positive feedback, they noted that live performances cannot always be fully controlled despite efforts to ensure they are suitable for the audience.
