Claudia Winkleman Steps Down From Chat Show After One Series, Citing Nerves

Claudia Winkleman has announced she is leaving the BBC chat show that bears her name after just one series, saying she was “too nervous to enjoy it.”

The presenter, best known for hosting The Traitors and formerly Strictly Come Dancing, fronted seven episodes of The Claudia Winkleman Show this spring. The program was made by So Television, the production company co-founded by Graham Norton, and aired in the Friday night BBC One slot previously held by Norton’s own talk show.

In a statement released on 16 July 2026, Winkleman thanked the BBC and the production team but said the experience wasn’t the right fit for her.

“I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent,” she said.
“Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it.
Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I’m doing.

The seven-week series launched in March and featured a high-profile guest list. Winkleman interviewed Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Goldblum, Niall Horan, Rachel Zegler, Ralph Fiennes, James McAvoy, Jamie Dornan, Vanessa Williams, and incoming Strictly co-host Josh Widdicombe.

Viewing figures were solid but not spectacular. Most episodes drew a combined average audience of between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers. For comparison, Norton’s talk show in the same slot typically attracts between 2.5 million and 3 million, with specials like the New Year’s Eve episode reaching up to 4 million.

Critics were divided. Some praised the show as warm and full of banter, while others called it messy and unfocused. The format followed the familiar late-night template: celebrity interviews, audience interaction, and Winkleman’s signature quick wit and fringe

Winkleman’s decision comes as she continues to front two of the BBC’s biggest entertainment formats. She stepped down from Strictly Come Dancing last year, but remains the host of The Traitors, including the upcoming Celebrity Traitors series later this year.

Winkleman Show an absolute joy,” he said. “Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision and would like to thank Claudia and the brilliant team at So Television for bringing the series to screen on the . As the host of the country’s most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the BBC very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for the new band of celebs.”

The vacancy in the spring schedule opened after Norton scaled back his own show in 2022. He dropped the spring run to focus on a shorter autumn and winter series, which created space for Winkleman’s show to launch.

Winkleman said she is not ruling out a return to chat shows in the future, but for now is focusing on projects she already loves. With The Traitors and other BBC commitments on her schedule, she remains one of the broadcaster’s most visible presenters.

The decision also highlights how challenging the traditional chat show format has become in the streaming era. While broadcast audiences for Friday night talk shows have softened, clips from interviews regularly reach millions more on YouTube and social media.

For now, The Claudia Winkleman Show will conclude after its debut series — a brief experiment that gave viewers a different side of the presenter, even if nerves meant she couldn’t fully enjoy being in the host’s chair.
