Emotions ran high in Lagos as family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate the life of beloved Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo during a moving Service of Songs held in his honour.
Dressed in white, mourners filled the event centre to pay their final respects to the actor, whose death on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 shocked fans and the entertainment industry. Alex reportedly passed away following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The ceremony was marked by heartfelt tributes from some of the people who knew him best. Actor IK Ogbonna, one of Alex’s closest friends, struggled to hold back tears as he reflected on their bond.
He said he wished Alex could have witnessed the overwhelming love being shown to him and described him as more than a friend—a brother whose presence brought light and joy wherever he went.According to Ogbonna, Alex was the kind of person whose energy made it difficult to imagine life without him.
He remembered him as a wise, vibrant, and inspiring individual who touched countless lives.Actress Nancy Isime also paid tribute, describing Alex as a genuinely good man whose warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met.Singer Yemi Alade shared how Alex encouraged her during a challenging period in her music career. She revealed that he believed in her talent and even appeared in the music video for her hit song “Johnny” without requesting payment.
Prayers were offered for Alex’s widow, Anwuli, and the entire family as they continue to mourn his loss. There were also assurances of support for the family ahead of the actor’s final burial rites.
The Service of Songs marked the beginning of Alex Ekubo’s final journey home, with friends, fans, and colleagues united in grief and gratitude for a life that left a remarkable impact on many people.Though gone too soon, the overwhelming turnout and emotional tributes served as a reminder of how deeply loved and respected Alex was within and beyond the entertainment industry.
