Peter Schmeichel Slams Refereeing After Controversial VAR Call Denies West Ham Against Arsenal

Peter Schmeichel was left fuming after Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham United.

The Manchester United legend couldn’t hide his frustration following a late equaliser from Callum Wilson that was ruled out after a lengthy VAR review. Officials decided that West Ham’s Pablo had fouled goalkeeper David Raya in the build-up.

Speaking after the match, Schmeichel argued that the decision was inconsistent and highlighted how Arsenal often get away with similar physical battles throughout the season.

“What really makes me angry is that Arsenal would never be top of the league if that’s a free-kick,” he said. “That’s how they’ve scored so many goals, by blocking people, holding people, doing all kinds of things.”And then we get to this point where VAR takes five minutes, starts it over again and again… that in itself puts so much doubt into the decision that it cannot be a free-kick.

I think it’s so wrong. It’s just crazy, and that decision today was wrong on so many levels.”
