Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has weighed in on the long-running debate surrounding Stonebwoy’s dominance in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year category.
Stonebwoy recently secured his 10th win in the category, maintaining a strong hold over the award for more than a decade. Out of the past 12 editions, only Ras Kuuku in 2020 and Epixode in 2021 have managed to interrupt his winning streak.
Over the years, some critics have argued that the category lacks strong competition, but Ras Kuuku disagrees with that claim.
Speaking in an interview, the “Wo” hitmaker explained that Stonebwoy’s continued success is largely due to the level of investment he puts into his music career.“
Everybody is working hard. It’s not true that the other artistes are sleeping,” Ras Kuuku said.According to him, Stonebwoy understands the business side of music better than many others and consistently invests heavily in promotion, branding, and marketing.“Stonebwoy invests more money into the business than most of us.
The more money you invest, the bigger the visibility,” he added.
Ras Kuuku noted that many reggae and dancehall artistes in Ghana are talented and actively creating music, but financial commitment often separates the top artistes from the rest.
He also stated that Stonebwoy’s investment benefits the entire genre by helping reggae and dancehall music gain more visibility and recognition.
Beyond the awards conversation, Ras Kuuku reflected on his emotional tribute performance for legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba at this year’s TGMA ceremony.
The performance received praise from fans online, with many applauding his vocal ability and stage delivery.Ras Kuuku described the moment as deeply personal, revealing that Daddy Lumba once hugged him three times after a performance and even called him the next day to appreciate him.“
When it comes to music, nobody compares to Daddy Lumba,” he said. “In songwriting, lyrics, style, voice, and performance, I don’t think Ghana has produced anybody like him.”
Following his tribute performance, some fans questioned why Ras Kuuku has never received a TGMA Male Vocal Performance nomination despite his vocal strength.
Reacting to the conversation, the musician confidently stated that no reggae and dancehall artiste in Ghana possesses a voice like his.On the music front, Ras Kuuku also announced that he is preparing to release a new song on his birthday, July 23, in collaboration with media personality Andy Dosty and other creatives.
